Guangxi Academy of Marine Sciences (Guangxi Mangrove Research Center) Profile

Guangxi Academy of Marine Sciences (Guangxi Mangrove Research Center) is a public welfare institution of the first-level department under the management of Guangxi Academy of Sciences. After the approval by Autonomous Regional Party Committe in 2022, Guangxi Academy of Marine Sciences was integrated by Guangxi Mangrove Research Center (Guangxi Marine Environment and Coastal Wetland Research Center) and Guangxi Beibu Gulf Marine Research Center, with the brand of “Guangxi Mangrove Research Center”, which has two office locations, the Nanning office located in the Xixiangtang District of Nanning and the Beihai office located in the Haicheng District of Beihai.

Guangxi Academy of Marine Sciences mainly focusing on basic and applied basic research, concentrates on mangrove protection and utilization, coral reef conservation and restoration, seagrass ecosystem conservation and restoration, marine environment monitoring, marine corrosion protection, offshore hydrodynamic processes, marine medicine, Beibu Gulf characteristic marine resources conservation, marine culture and proliferation, aquatic animal medical technology, smart fisheries construction and marine mammal scientific education. There is one national metrology accreditation laboratory, four provincial-level key laboratories, three provincial-level engineering research centers, three new research and development institutions, eight  supporting platforms, multiple service platforms and research bases.

Guangxi Academy of Marine Sciences currently has 143 staffs including 15 senior professionals, 46 sub-senior professionals, 54 with doctoral degrees. Two academicians have been flexibly introduced and a post-doctoral research center has been set up. There are two specialists receiving special State Allowance, one selected for National Talents Project, one awarded National Excellent Scientist, one awarded Guangxi Youth Award, one awarded Guangxi Top-notch Talents, two selected for New Century Talents Project and five honored with Nanning High-level Talents. It has won numerous awards for its achievements, including the First Prize of National Marine Science and Technology Award and the First Prize of Guangxi Science and Technology Progress Award.

In the new period, Guangxi Academy of Marine Sciences will deeply learn and implement the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress and General Secretary Xi Jinping’s major strategic requirements for Guangxi, and profoundly carry out the innovation-driven development strategy to better serve Guangxi’s strategic development needs of “Sea-oriented Development”. By stimulating the vitality of sci-tech innovation and enhancing innovation capability, it will make more efforts to become the mainstay and vanguard of marine sci-tech innovation in Guangxi, and will be developed into an ASEAN-oriented and domestically first-rate comprehensive local marine institution.
