Marine Biology Research Station of Guangxi Academy of Sciences
The Marine Biology Research Station of Guangxi Academy of Sciences, Guangxi Joint Laboratory of Aquatic Biology (co-built with the Institute of Aquatic Biology of Chinese Academy of Sciences), and Cetacean Research and Conservation Station (co-built with Beibu Gulf University) were built in May 2019. According to the science base co-construction agreement signed between Guangxi Academy of Sciences and the Autonomous Region Seismological Bureau, the research station was relocated to the Autonomous Region Seismological Bureau Weizhou Island Seismic Monitoring Center Station in August 2022 for office operation.
Facing the needs of high-quality development of Guangxi's seaward economy and the construction of marine ecological civilization, the research station aims at long-term and stable observation and monitoring, scientific research and demonstration, and carries out research on the investigation and study of marine mammals, the protection and restoration of marine ecosystems (coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangrove forests, and oyster reefs), and mariculture of characteristic fine varieties and marine environmental protection, as well as carrying out research on science education, marine culture and study tourism. The research station provides long series of basic data, scientific basis and key technology for the construction of marine ecological civilization in Guangxi, and provides a support platform for the protection of marine biodiversity, safeguarding the ecological environment security of the region and promoting the sustainable development of the region.
Relying on the research station, it will actively strive for national and local major research projects, improve its influence, realize the scientific value of the field station, create a major research base for marine mammals in China, equip it with functions such as scientific research, technological innovation, talent cultivation and cultivation of featured industries, and set up the “Coral Reef Pilot Sample Area” and the “Mangrove Pilot Sample Area”. “Mangrove experimental sample area” and other demonstration areas, to build a research station integrating monitoring, research and demonstration, to become an important monitoring, experimental and research, demonstration and promotion base for natural ecology and experimental ecology in Guangxi, and to build an autonomous region-level and national-level field scientific observatory and research station.
Since August 2022, more than 60 lectures have been held for students from Beijing, Nanning and Shanghai, with more than 1,200 students participating. For the second consecutive year, the Weizhou Island Ocean Observation Festival was held, and the Weizhou Island Station provided strong support in terms of hardware and facilities, which enabled the event to be carried out smoothly. The cetacean research program with the Institute of Aquatic Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Beibu Gulf University, and Guangxi Normal University steadily carried out monthly intercept surveys of Bryde's whales in the waters of Weizhou Island, and four postgraduate students were trained at the station. We have received about 400 exchanges and researches from research institutes, universities, famous enterprises and media, such as Institute of Hydrobiology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Oceanography of Chinese Academy of Sciences, China University of Geosciences, Guangxi Normal University, Beibuwan University, Ant Forest, Alashan SEE, Peach Blossom Garden Foundation, CCTV, etc., including 6 academicians and provincial and ministerial-level leaders.
